A friend of mine made the best website ever.
World Champion John Higgins
I LOVE IT SO MUCH. The picture changes all the time, so you can visit it whenever you need a reminder of how BRILLIANT the world is. It is the most cheering of all things.
I love that John Higgins is still world champion.
It is going to be incredibly sad in 51 weeks when that website has to disappear, but possibly maybe it won’t have to and the world will carry on being ever so shiny. That would be really very nice. Maybe he will be world champion for ever.

HELLO. OH GOD. I can’t really believe that. I was keeping so calm and so together and it was just painful and awful and snooker was going to be a total waste and awful and I was going to have to burn my beautiful chart but INSTEAD OF THAT, INSTEAD, WE GOT THIS. And it was TRIUMPHANT AND BRILLIANT AND SO BEAUTIFUL. I love John Higgins, I love that he won like a grown up and didn’t sit and worry for frames and frames and I know Murphy played badly and gave him many chances but I AM ALL FOR THAT.
I love the bbc quite a lot. They did their evening session sad thing at the beginning where they make the players talk in sad tones about their nerves and their nearly inevitable tragic disappointment, and the crucible and how awful it is, and they did a montage of quotes about nerves and people talking about nerves and GENERALLY MAKING PEOPLE MORE NERVOUS THAN THEY ALREADY WERE. And they basically just played dramatic sad music over a scary empty crucible which is the best thing to do. But it was beautiful and brilliant. And I love snooker so much.

Okay. I can’t really think about snooker, I can’t really be remotely reasonable about this, so I’m just going to write it and then not think about it.
I wish everyone would stop saying how sometimes Higgins collapses and how often Murphy comes back. These are their ways and I KNOW THAT, I just wish they would stop saying it. I also wish they would stop pretending that John is strong when he’s in front and that this is a mountain to climb, though. I wish they would stop saying anything. I’m not easily pleased.

How much do I not even want there to be a second session?
Didn’t the bbc not let Robertson advertise Burger King on his waistcoat one year, because they weren’t allowed that many sponsors or something? Because when the players are standing waiting to go on – and Higgins is SMILING, by the way, with his most amazing smile – all we can see is a huge picture of Robertson with BURGER KING splashed on his chest. It’s very confusing.
The short version of these frames is ‘oh god John Higgins, OH MY VERY GOD’.

I didn’t update this after their afternoon session. I really couldn’t. I still can’t really think about the snooker. I can’t talk about it. I am made of horror and despair about tomorrow. I am not calm. There are whole patches of the day I don’t remember. I hate snooker with a huge and abounding love.
I think they introduced Murphy as the pride of england. He is not our pride. My personal pride is invested in John Parrott. Today and forever. I love him, I think he’s a brilliant presenter, I quite like him in commentary, he is lovely when he interviews people, I love when they let him present trophies and don’t let Ray Stubbs do it. I’m starting to get depressed already about how he won’t be on the telly every day having a cup of tea and a chat. But it’s okay. Because it’ll be next year before we know it, and Hazel will come back next year. She practically promised.
John Higgins looked exhausted while he was waiting to go on. It wasn’t my most positive start to the match. Oh god. I hope he is okay.

I wish Ken Doherty didn’t have to commentate on Shaun Murphy. He says nice things about him and I cannot stand it.
I wish nobody had to commentate on Murphy, because he is out of the tournament.
I am mostly keeping this blog because otherwise I have no idea what ever happened because my posts ‘elsewhere’ just go ‘OH FUCK, FUCK FUCK FUCK, I FUCKING HATE SNOOKER’. But that is EVERYTHING I want to say just now. Today had the opportunity to go So Well. And it just blankly didn’t. And I hate snooker. A bit.
I don’t know how I can justify being this miserable when one of my favourite players in the world is in his second world final in three years, no. But it is how I feel, so whatever.
What happened isn’t even clear to me, it wasn’t really the sort of thing you could keep notes on. Not if you were concentrating on not noticing it happen for one reason or another.

Right. There are a lot of things I don’t like about today. But right high up there, is that they let Willie Bloody Thorne commentate two sessions in a row. What the fuck? I spent the whole boring Murphy match being glad that no matter how fucking annoying Willie Thorne might be, at least he wasn’t going to be commentating on John Higgins as he slowly crawled out of the world championship (I am not an optimistic person) and then no! They just kept both him AND Dennis, so we had to listen to them ALL DAY LONG. And we didn’t deserve that. And John Higgins deserved better. He deserved Clive and Terry. I hate the bbc.
And John Higgins.

Eventually I had to turn away from snooker. That’s how awful it was. It was almost the first time this tournament that there was snooker on and I purposefully turned over. I’ve watched practically all the snooker this year. I often do, but often I miss sessions here and there, and it’s a bit strange, considering half the people I love didn’t bother to show up, and considering the coverage has been worse than it has been for years. But I really needed two weeks off from everything in the world. So it’s worked out well.
I have no idea why they decided that having Ken Doherty come in for the last four days, and stop John and Steve from being in the studio together, was a good plan. I don’t understand it. I really love Ken Doherty, and he sits in the studio GLOWING BEAUTIFULLY, but he is just a depressing interruption, instead of a happy surprise. I do like that they’re sitting in the studio a bit more than the cue zone, though. And Rishi is here today so we don’t have to put up with Ray Stubbs being surprised what an exciting match this is. It doesn’t matter which match it is, Ray Stubbs is surprised.

The bbc went mad and did a montage of Allen vs Higgins to something about how ‘furious angels will bring you back to me’. It’s a bit super of them. They also made them both green.
Higgins vs Allen (third session)
Allen won the first frame. Which wasn’t my plan for the evening. John got a snooker and everything and nearly came back at him, but then he missed a black. Higgins had two goes in the next frame, and Dennis Taylor and Steve Davis pretended that he had never needed two chances in the earlier sessions. Because they weren’t watching them properly or something. John eventually won this frame.

I don’t know a lot of what happened in this match. I know that makes this an entirely useless post, but for neatness’s sake it is here anyway.
Robertson vs Murphy (second session)
Frame 1 – Murphy got in, and went in off from frame ball. But Robertson very much didn’t capitalise on that. So Murphy won anyway. Pah. 5-4.

It’s snooker, and all’s well. It’s raining. I love snooker when it’s raining especially much, and I have decided it probably means that Robertson will win today. For sure. I’m going to eat chicken sandwiches and drink tea.
I don’t think this whole typing up everything I write down during matches is particularly helpful to future!me when I come to try to remember this tournament, but I do it anyway. Basically the information I need is that John Higgins played super, but still had trouble finding position on occasion, and mostly won frames with two chances, but was awesome, don’t get me wrong. But the commentators didn’t seem to notice that he wasn’t finishing a lot of frames particularly well.
And Allen didn’t really manage the crucible with just one table. He was tired. And that is what new people are supposed to do, become too exhausted for snooker by the semi final, it is their way. Although it is not any excuse for Robertson. Obviously. I really like Mark Allen. I hope he doesn’t turn out to be awful, like Selby did. And Murphy.

Hm. I kept forgetting to stick up for Robertson, because I have got so used to wanting him to lose against Carter and Maguire. And then he would miss and suddenly Murphy would be at the table and I would remember and it was all dreadful.

I love that Terry calls the young Ali Carter, Allister Carter as if he was a grown up now. That has very little to do with today. I hate Ray Stubbs. That is more relevant.
Higgins vs Allen
Frame 1 – Allen won this frame. He got in first and got some points, then he let Higgins have some points, then Higgins played a loose safety and Mark Allen cleared up the balls and won. And the table is shocking.
Frame 2 – Allen does a poor break off shot, but John goes wrong quite quickly and lets Allen back in. Then Mark Allen misses a black off its spot. Twice. And the table just does what it likes, with no regard for gravity, or cause and effect at all. John wins this frame. 1-1.

SNOOKER IS THE BEST SPORT EVER THOUGHT OF.
It was nearly an entirely bad day, but then not quite. As far as I can find out Clive Everton isn’t meant to commentate on any more matches now, he was just hired up to the quarters. I’m not sure, because it just feels impossible to me that the bbc wouldn’t mention it. And make the most amazing montage of all his best ever moments and make everyone say how much they love him. I suppose that is difficult when you have wrongly fired someone. But it sort of makes me hate everyone. If we’d lost Hendry, Higgins and Clive all on one day my faith in the world would have been severely tested.
John and Steve had to go and make an official prove that the pockets weren’t any bigger than usual because there have been so many centuries this year. It is a bit unfair, if new cloths every day are really doing it, it doesn’t really count. I suppose we’ll see if it’s the same way next year and for the next few years. The crucible is keeping snooker until 2014 now. Which is nice.

Maguire vs Robertson
Oh good god, snooker. Do better.
If I was Maguire I would politely ask them not to call me on fire if I was blatantly not.
The first frame took an hour, all the reds went into a corner and they didn’t re-rack or even think about it and the commentators were so bored and they were Dennis and Neal and they just had nothing to say. At the end Dennis was all ‘OH GOD I NEED COFFEE, BYE!’ Maguire scored a lot of ones, potting reds without having a chance for a colour. But then eventually he got some real points. Then Robertson played for snookers despite it having taken an hour already and oh god. He didn’t get them and eventually Maguire won that one for 5-4.

If I was in charge of the draw for the world championship this would never happen. Partly because I wouldn’t let Murphy and Selby be in the world championship but also because it is ridiculous to make the two people I love most play the two people I hate most ON THE SAME DAY, IN THE SAME SESSION. Badly done, snooker. Not just for the scheduling, obviously. Badly done on so many levels.

I wouldn’t even enjoy snooker if it wasn’t this painfully awful. So it’s actually fine.
I don’t know why Hendry wears black. Admittedly I don’t like it anyway, but he cannot play in black, he does not look like a snooker player and therefore does not LOOK LIKE A SNOOKER PLAYER. This is my expert thought on snooker tonight.
Also John Parrott was commentating again, and I think he has possibly only commentated on Stephen Hendry this year. Which I don’t entirely disapprove of, but I don’t understand either.

I am so exhausted. Slightly because we’ve had people in the house, doing something to the radiators, but also slightly because of snooker and how it was incredible. And impossible. And exhausting.
The bbc are re-showing Hendry’s 147. I keep expecting them to discover it’s not real and disallow it, I keep expecting him to miss things still. It’s awful, I hate the bit where he takes a plant and John Virgo goes “No! OOoh, yes!” because he thought it was out and it wasn’t. I thought that too. But everything was just quite brilliant instead. Sorry. Clive says at the end that he’s a marvellous champion in a marvellous moment, one of many in his marvellous career.

Day 11 sounds terribly close to Day 17 in my opinion. They should slow down a bit.
Allen vs Day
I didn’t pay a lot of attention to this table. They were 2-2 at the mid-session. My favourite bit was Terry exclaiming with surprise that the safety statistics weren’t too bad! “If he gets into position here he’ll come out in a rash!”
Day won the fifth frame, and then went and chatted with Allen a bit while the ref put the balls back. Willie claims that Terry never spoke to him when they were playing and was always miserable. Terry denies this a bit. “Steve Davis was the worst, never even said yes or no. But you can’t shut him up today.”
Allen levelled again, then went ahead in the next, 4-3. I don’t know who won the final frame. Nobody knows. Nobody was watching it.

I found this a bit hard to care about. And therefore didn’t watch it very hard.
Maguire vs King
Maguire came back at 10-6 in front, and won three frames. It was not entirely inspiring. The first frame seemed to take for ages, but Maguire won it while the commentators were saying how he was unlikely to win scrappy frames. I think he won that 75 minute frame from before as well. But I know what they mean. But maybe it’s okay. He won the second one more properly, and then . . . I didn’t pay attention.
Dott vs Selby
